A Q Grader is a highly trained and certified professional who are trained to evaluate coffee based on standards set forth by the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) and Specialty Coffee Association. The certification process is demanding. The course, which is proctored by a CQI lead instructor, consists of three days of lecture and sensory calibration followed by three days of testing, during which hopeful Q Graders must undergo 20 sensory exams ranging from green coffee defect analysis to cupping triangulations to blind aroma identification – all of which test the grader’s ability to identify a variety of coffee characteristics, defects and qualities. Only those with sharp sensory acuity and an in-depth knowledge of coffee are able to pass the exams and earn the prestigious title of Q Grader. Not to mention, Q Graders are required to pass an in-person calibration every three years to maintain their certification.
