Coffee has long been the beverage that fuels America’s mornings, but how each generation enjoys it continues to evolve. The latest National Coffee Data Trends (NCDT) 2025 Fall Report provides some insight into shifting tastes from traditional drip drinkers to specialty espresso enthusiasts and cold brew lovers.

Traditional vs. Specialty: Who Loves What?
While traditional coffee still holds strong among older Americans, specialty coffee is winning over younger drinkers. According to the report, 54% of Americans 60 and over prefer traditional coffee, while 57% of those between the ages of 25 and 39 opt for specialty brews. Interestingly, almost half of 18- to 24-year-olds enjoy at least one cup of specialty coffee a day – the highest level recorded since 2020.

This generational divide highlights how coffee has become more than a caffeine fix for younger generations – it’s an experience. Whether it’s a craft latte, single-origin pour-over or a frozen espresso drink, younger coffee lovers are exploring the full range of coffee offerings.

Espresso-based Beverages Popular with Younger Adults
Specialty espresso-based beverages are most popular with Millennials and Gen Z. Almost 70% of coffee enthusiasts between 25 and 39 reported having at least one in the past week. Among younger 18 to 24-year-old coffee drinkers, cappuccinos are the top choice at 26%, followed by lattes and espressos, both at 20% respectively.

The love for these drinks tapers off with age though, as only 29% of adults 60 and older reported having an espresso-based beverage recently.

Medium Roast Rules, but Light Roast Is Finding a Youthful Fan Base
Generational distinctions are also evident when it comes to roast preference. Across all age groups, medium roast dominates, with 60% of past-day drinkers choosing it. Light roast coffee, however, has its biggest fan base among 18- to 24-year-olds with 24% opting for it over medium or dark roast options. This is most likely due to Gen Z’s preference for brighter, fruiter flavor profiles which are often associated with specialty coffee.

Overall, medium roast remains the most reliable crow-pleaser across all generations and regions.

Hot vs. Cold: The Generational Temperature Divide
Perhaps the greatest generational gap emerges in coffee temperature preferences. While 89% of adults over the age of 60 prefer their coffee hot, only 43% of Gen Z adults agree. Younger drinkers have a strong affinity for chilled and blended coffee drinks – 40% of their cups are cold or iced and 17% are frozen. This trend underscores how cold coffee has transformed beyond a summer indulgence to a year-round staple, particularly among younger consumers who value customization, convenience and refreshment.

Brewing the Future
The 2025 NCDT data paints a clear picture – coffee habits are evolving with each generation. Older Americans continue to uphold the traditional hot cup of coffee, while younger drinkers are redefining the ritual with cold brews, espresso creations and love of light roasts.
