Waffles, with roots in ancient Greece and medieval Europe, evolved from flat cakes cooked between plates to the iconic breakfast staple we know today. They gained popularity in the U.S. through Dutch colonists in the 17th century, with popularity rumored to have grown when Thomas Jefferson brought a waffle iron home from France in the 1790s and began hosting waffle parties.

It wasn’t until Cornelius Swartwout of Troy, New York, patented the first waffle iron in 1869 though that waffles became a true staple of American breakfast. Today, celebrate International Waffle Day, with Farmer Brothers delicious buttermilk waffles.
