At Farmer Brothers, responsibly sourcing the coffee we share with our customers is central to who we are. We work with third-party certifications, such as the Rainforest Alliance and Fair Trade, while also advancing our own Project DIRECT initiative programs designed to directly support producers and coffee-growing communities around the world. As we refine our portfolio and launch Sum>One Coffee Roasters, we’re taking the next step. We’ve partnered with Enveritas for responsible sourcing verification within our Project DIRECT platform.

For nearly a decade, Enveritas has worked to support the more than 100,000 producers it visits annually across the globe. During these visits, they assess sustainability challenges at the social, economic and environmental levels. A key part of their mission is to offer a different way of assessing sustainability – an approach that highlights what farms are doing well, while encouraging a deeper understanding and commitment to solving the most challenging sustainability issues.

Partnering with Enveritas gives Farmer Brothers deeper insight into the impact of every purchase we make and strengthens our ability to support the producers who make it all possible.

Companies participating in Enveritas programming can earn a responsible sourcing claim by fulfilling three key steps:

  • Undergo verification of their purchases and degree of traceability
  • Undertake Enveritas’ assessment of their sourcing areas on an annual basis for sustainability issues
  • Invest in continuous improvement programs proportionately to the purchases of the company.

Farmer Brothers is well on our way to meeting these requirements. In fact, in 2025, 809,433 pounds, or 41%, of our Sum>One Coffee Roasters specialty brand coffee qualified for Enveritas responsible sourcing requirements. With the remaining 59% of volume within Sum>One being third-party certified by Fair Trade & USDA Organic. The Sum>One brand has proudly achieved 100% responsible sourcing by second-party verification and third-party certification.

As we remain committed to sustainable operations, we will continue to expand on our transparency by highlighting the work we do every day to ensure our products are responsibly sourced and have the greatest impact possible where it matters most.
